Summit Auto Group Best of the Week: Never was there a better moment for SU basketball this season than seeing John Gillon nail that 3-point shot off the glass at the buzzer to give the Orange a 78-75 victory over Duke as more than 30,000 at the Carrier Dome roared their approval. If it’s a close call for the Orange to reach the NCAA tournament, and it gets there, this single shot may make the difference, and is arguably the most memorable buzzer-beater at the Dome since Pearl Washington from half court to beat Boston College in 1984.
McDonald’s Rewind and Archive: That epochal SU win over Duke brings to mind another epochal Orange victory over the Blue Devils inside the Dome. It came on February 1, 2014, when a record crowd of more than 35,000 streamed in and were treated to an instant classic, one where SU appeared to have it won before Duke’s Rasheed Sulaimon hit a 3-pointer in the waning seconds of regulation. It went to overtime, and the drama continued, back and forth, before SU pulled it out 91-89, igniting a series of close contests between one-time strangers, but now fierce ACC rivals.
Eaton Crouse Hinds Community Corner: The plan of having a record crowd show up for the SU women’s basketball game against Notre Dame on February 19 worked out, nearly to perfection. More than 11,000 streamed into the Carrier Dome and seemed to give the Orange an extra dose of energy, for it led most of the game before the Irish stormed out in front in the fourth quarter. Still, it wasn’t until the final seconds that ND pulled it out, 85-80, and Quentin Hillsman went out of his way praising the fans that showed up to make this a special occasion.
The U.S. Army Weekly Recap: Everything looked to be bleak for SU men’s basketball after three consecutive defeats – at Pittsburgh, at home in overtime to Louisville, then at Georgia Tech. Then came February 22, Duke’s arrival at the Dome and an epic battle where, again, SU erased a significant deficit (33-25 at halftime), caught up, and then traded blows with the Blue Devils until John Gillon banked in that 3-pointer at the buzzer and the Orange Nation shook with delight. Whether than 78-75 win locks up an NCAA Tournament bid or not remains an open question.
