Summit Auto Group Best of the Week: Granted, SU did not beat Georgetown when this most intense of Orange basketball rivalries renewed itself on December 14, but Buddy Boeheim sure gave it an effort. Born long after the famous duels of the 1980s and ’90s with John Thompson’s best teams, Buddy delivered on 25 points, seven times connecting from 3-point range in 13 attempts and going nine-for-18 overall. In a short time, Boeheim has gone from a curiosity to a vital part of the Orange’s attack.
SOS Rewind and Archive: This is a good moment to count up the numbers in the SU-Georegtown rivalry. Counting last Saturday’s defeat to the Hoyas, they’ve played 95 times and the Orange has won 51 of them. And 2020 would mark two particular milestones in the rivalry – 40 years since the last game at Manley Field House that Georgetown won to break SU’s 56-game home win streak, and 30 years since the 1990 game in the Dome where John Thompson got ejected in the first half, a game the Orange would eventually win in Derrick Coleman’s last home appearance.
AFLAC Trivia Tidbit: When SU faced Oakland on December 18, it put together two of the coaches with the longest tenures in America. Jim Boeheim, of course, but Greg Kampe has led the Golden Grizzlies since 1984, when the school in the suburbs north of Detroit was still a Division II program. Kampe led the school’s transition to Division I and, in the ensuing 36 years, has won more than 600 games, three times leading Oakland to the NCAA Tournament – in 2005, 2010, 2011, all while still the conference now known as the Summit League.
Upstate Medical University Community Corner: One of SU’s top players, Bourama Sidibe, is originally from Mali, in Africa. Maybe it only figured that Sidibe would be one of the Orange’s standouts in the course of its summer trip to Italy. Against Oxygen Bassano, Sidibe engineered a double-double and finished with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Then, against Virtus Roma, SU won again and Sidibe continued to eat up the glass, pulling down 17 rebounds to go with his six points.
U.S. Army Weekly Recap: As it turned out, the latest SU vs. Georgetown showdown in the nation’s capital on December 14 went in the Hoyas’ favor. Trailing most of the way, the Orange lost 89-79, this despite Buddy Boeheim putting up 25 points against the team against which his father coached so many memorable games. But at least SU fared better a few days later when, in front of a sparse Dome crowd, it knocked off the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 74-62, though it didn’t pull away until the final minutes as Elijah Hughes put up 24 points.
